David Harbour Is Eager to Leave ‘Stranger Things’ Behind

  • David Harbour, in an interview with Insider, discusses his plans to move beyond his role in “Stranger Things.”
  • He aims to diversify his career so that he is not solely associated with Jim Hopper.
  • Harbour states, “I do love the character, but I don’t want to be simply defined by that character.”

David Harbour expresses gratitude for how “Stranger Things” has impacted his life but desires to be recognized for more than just the character Hopper.

In a recent profile with Insider, the actor reveals that he has been contemplating his post-“Stranger Things” career prospects.

Harbour shares, “It’s a unique position that I never anticipated. In the first year of ‘Stranger Things,’ I remember discussing with a publicist who suggested I shouldn’t be too closely associated with the show. But I love this show and the character. However, I don’t want to be solely defined by them. I don’t want to be limited to just being that guy.”

Harbour reflects on George Clooney’s departure from “ER” and how he transitioned from being known as “the guy from ‘ER'” to a renowned actor in his own right.

Harbour has already embarked on his journey towards career expansion. He portrayed the Marvel character Red Guardian in the 2021 film “Black Widow” (and will reprise the role for “Thunderbolts”) and starred in the 2022 hit “Violent Night.”

He aspires to continue showcasing his versatility in his upcoming movie, the race-car drama “Gran Turismo,” set to release on August 25.

Harbour acknowledges the complexity of his situation, stating, “It’s tricky because I don’t want to disregard the fans who appreciate me for this role that I also love. However, I also want to spread my wings. I have more to offer, different facets of my talent that I want audiences to witness. I don’t want to be recognized as ‘Hopper’ every five minutes for the rest of my life.”

Prior to “Stranger Things,” Harbour was a respected character actor in theater and film. However, the series propelled him into widespread fame. He has since garnered two Emmy nominations for his portrayal of Sheriff Jim Hopper.

Production for the final season of “Stranger Things” is currently on hold due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes.
