Russia Set to Launch Another Moon Rocket After 47 Years

Russia has not sent a rocket to the moon in almost five decades, but the Russian space agency is now in a hurry. Luna 25, the upcoming mission, is set for liftoff on Friday morning, aiming to land on the moon’s south pole. If successful, this would mark the first time that an Earth-launched spacecraft has reached this location, as reported by Time. However, Luna 25 faces competition from India’s Chandrayaan 3 lunar rover, which was launched four weeks ago and is making progressively wider orbits until it reaches its destination. Both countries have chosen the same arrival date: August 23.

The moon’s south pole is an area of interest for human exploration due to the presence of water ice in perpetually shadowed craters. Luna 25 is scheduled to collect samples and bring them back to Earth for analysis. Despite the coinciding landing date, both space agencies assure that there is no risk of interference or collision. Russia’s agency, Roscosmos, stated, “There is enough space for everyone on the moon.” The launch of Luna 25 will be streamed on YouTube, as reported by CNN, with the event scheduled for 7:10pm EDT on Thursday.
