LA Council Approves Proposal for Land Allocation to Marginalized Communities

The Los Angeles City Council has taken a significant step forward in addressing historical marginalization by initiating a plan to identify and transfer land to marginalized groups within the city. Former Councilman Mike Bonin introduced this motion in November 2022, which received unanimous support from the council members. In the next 60 days, various departments will compile a thorough inventory of “underutilized, surplus, and/or remnant lands” across the city, as well as public lands held by county, regional, state, and federal agencies.

The city’s chief legislative analyst, in collaboration with the Civil and Human Rights and Equity Department and other relevant departments, will also provide recommendations within 60 days on how to utilize the identified land. Some of the proposed uses include community land trusts, urban agriculture, and other initiatives that prioritize principles such as self-determination, community building, and healing.
