Police Suspect Australian Woman’s Deceased Former In-Laws Consumed Toxic Mushrooms

  • An Australian woman hosted a lunch for her ex in-laws, resulting in the mysterious deaths of three of them.
  • Erin Patterson, the woman in question, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, and authorities are currently categorizing the deaths as “unexplained.”
  • Law enforcement is actively investigating the incident and suspect that the consumption of poisonous mushrooms may be to blame.

An Australian woman hosted a lunch for her former in-laws in late July. Sadly, within a week, three of them tragically passed away, and authorities suspect that poisonous mushrooms could be the cause.

On July 29, Erin Patterson invited her former parents-in-law, Gail and Don Patterson, as well as her former mother-in-law’s sister and her husband, Heather and Ian Wilkinson, to her home in the southern Victorian town of Leongatha, as reported by CNN. Erin’s ex-husband, Simon Patterson, did not attend, but their two children were present during the gathering.

The following day, all four of Patterson’s ex-in-laws fell gravely ill and were promptly taken to the hospital, according to Victoria Police. Tragically, Gail Patterson (70) and Heather Wilkinson (66) passed away on August 4, and Don Patterson (70) succumbed to his illness a day later.

Meanwhile, Ian Patterson (68) remains in critical condition and continues to receive medical care at the hospital.

Although Erin Patterson has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, stating to reporters that she is devastated and expresses her love and apologies, Victoria Police declared her a suspect due to her role as the cook and her lack of symptoms.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the symptoms experienced by the guests align with the consumption of death cap mushrooms, which are notably toxic and can cause severe stomach pains, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially life-threatening liver and kidney damage, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control.

Detective Inspector Dean Thomas emphasized the need to consider all possibilities, stating that innocence should not be dismissed. However, given the circumstances of three deaths and an additional critical illness, thorough investigation remains necessary.

Police executed a search warrant at Patterson’s residence and interviewed her on Saturday. They also discovered that Patterson and her two children had consumed a different meal compared to the four in-laws.
