France advises against packing clothing items that are stereotypically associated with the country you are visiting.

He specifically mentions the beret in Paris, stating that locals don’t typically wear them and wearing one may cause embarrassment.

“Anything that you have seen in a cartoon and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, Parisians wear this’ — that’s a cartoon, that’s not real life,” he adds.

Another giveaway of being a tourist is wearing socks with sandals, which is more of an American trend according to France.

In his Trainline style guide, France shares more tips for dressing like a European, including avoiding camera bags and bucket hats.

He also provides vacation packing tips, suggesting cotton and linen fabrics to stay sweat-free in the summer heat.

“Anything that feels cumbersome is going to feel horrible when you’re in a place that doesn’t typically have air conditioning, and most places in Europe don’t,” he advises. “You might have a gorgeous silk dress, but silk does not do well in humidity or heat.”

When traveling in Europe, France always tries to stick to a carry-on bag, as it makes getting around much easier.

“And quite honestly, if you’re going for four to five days, you can get everything you need into your hand luggage without an issue,” he adds.
