Longstanding TV and film actor Kenneth Tigar is set to reprise his role as a 100-year-old Holocaust survivor in the Barrington Stage Company’s production of “The Happiest Man on Earth.” This one-character play will run from September 22 to October 8 on BSC’s intimate St. Germain Stage.

“The Happiest Man on Earth” was written by Mark St. Germain, a longtime associate of Barrington Stage, who has had 14 plays produced by the company. The play is based on a bestselling 2020 memoir of the same name by Eddie Jaku, published when he was 100 years old. Eddie, born in Leipzig in 1920, was the son of proud German Jews whose lives were shattered by the Nazis.
In this 80-minute play, Tigar skillfully portrays Eddie as a centenarian, sharing his story with a synagogue audience in his adopted homeland of Australia. He also takes on the roles of various characters, including family, friends, fellow prisoners, and Nazis. The play was commissioned by BSC from St. Germain through the Sydelle Blatt New Works Commission Fund. The stage itself is named after St. Germain and is housed in a building endowed by philanthropists Sydelle and Lee Blatt.
Performances of “The Happiest Man on Earth” from September 22 to October 8 will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Saturdays, and at 1:30 p.m. on Sundays, with additional Saturday matinees at 1:30 p.m. on September 23 and October 7.
