Newcastle United: Premier League 2023-24 Preview, Team No. 15

Guardian writers’ predicted position: 6th (NB: this is not necessarily Louise Taylor’s prediction but the average of our writers’ tips)

Last season’s position: 4th

Prospects

The future looks bright for Newcastle United, although there are concerns that their impressive fourth-place finish last season may have been an overachievement. Their participation in the Champions League could stretch their squad, especially considering the limitations imposed by financial fair play regulations despite their wealthy Saudi Arabian owners. However, the team boasts talented international players such as Bruno Guimarães, Sven Botman, Sandro Tonali, and Nick Pope, and it would be unwise to underestimate their capabilities.

The success of the upcoming season will largely depend on the performances of individuals like Joelinton, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, and Miguel Almirón, who showed improvements last season. Additionally, Eddie Howe’s ability to manage and rotate his team effectively will play a crucial role. Newcastle’s high-energy, high-pressing style can be demanding, but they have shown great fitness levels and have made wise signings, such as Tonali and Harvey Barnes, during the summer.

Although there are areas that require reinforcement, particularly the right side of the central defense, where competition for Fabian Schär is needed, Howe will be cautious not to disrupt the chemistry of a committed squad. The team is filled with good characters resembling the likes of Kieran Trippier. Howe is also mindful of providing opportunities for young talents like Elliot Anderson and Lewis Miley. While the upcoming season may present challenges, Newcastle United is undoubtedly on an upward trajectory towards success.

The manager

Eddie Howe’s appointment as manager of Newcastle United came as a result of Unai Emery’s last-minute decision to decline the job. However, Howe has proven to be an excellent choice. After successfully avoiding relegation in his first season, he surprised everyone by securing Champions League qualification in his second campaign. Howe utilized his sabbatical effectively during the transition from Bournemouth to Newcastle, spending time shadowing Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid and Andoni Iraola at Rayo Vallecano. These experiences transformed Howe from a coach known for producing attacking teams with defensive vulnerabilities into a tactically astute manager, leading a disciplined and resilient Newcastle side.

The Toon Army has embraced Eddie Howe as their manager.

Leading the shirt sales

Alexander Isak, the 23-year-old Swedish forward, proved his worth with a £60 million transfer from Real Sociedad last summer. Despite struggles with hamstring injuries, he displayed immense talent during the second half of the season. Isak scored 10 goals in 22 Premier League appearances and showcased his versatility by excelling both as a center-forward and on the left wing. He is more than just a backup for England center-forward Callum Wilson and has formed a fruitful partnership with him. Isak may not be the next Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but his technical abilities and balance make him a joy to watch.

Folk hero

Bruno Guimarães has captured the hearts of Newcastle fans. Choosing to play for Newcastle over Arsenal endeared the Brazilian playmaker to the Tyneside faithful. However, it is his ability to elevate his teammates that truly won their affections. Guimarães is a highly skilled and versatile midfielder who excels in both the No. 6 and No. 8 roles. He wears the No. 39 shirt as a tribute to his father, a retired Rio de Janeiro taxi driver who always drove car No. 39.

One to watch

Anthony Gordon had a slow start at St James’ Park following his £40 million move from Everton in January. However, he impressed during his time representing England Under-21s as they won the European Championship this summer. Gordon also showcased his talents during Newcastle’s pre-season trip to the United States. The 22-year-old winger, who can also play as a central striker or in midfield, initially struggled to grasp Eddie Howe’s tactics but has since shown great dedication to understanding and executing them. His improvement makes him a player to keep an eye on this season.
