Leading US Women’s Amateur at Bel-Air Country Club: Whittier Golfer Takes the Top Spot

In a dazzling display of skill, Briana Chacon, a resident of Whittier, shot an impressive five-under 65 at Bel-Air Country Club during the second round of the 123rd U.S. Women’s Amateur. Chacon now holds a commanding four-stroke lead over Caroline Canales from Southern California and Katie Cranston from Canada.

Chacon, a graduate student at Oregon and alumna of La Serna High School in Whittier, had previously shared the first-round lead at 4-under with Canales. Starting her round on the 10th hole, Chacon began with three consecutive pars before sinking birdies on the 13th, 14th, and 16th holes. She finished the back nine with an exceptional 3-under 31.

Chacon continued her stellar performance with a birdie on the first hole. Her only setback came with a bogey on the second hole, a par-4. However, she quickly bounced back with another birdie on the par-5 fifth hole.

Canales, a junior at UCLA and former standout from Calabasas High School, managed to stay at 1-under through seven holes on Tuesday. Despite a bogey on the par-3 third hole, Canales showed resilience with birdies on the fifth and sixth holes.

Cranston, a sophomore at Auburn University, displayed her prowess by shooting a solid 2-under 68 in the second round. She started with a birdie on the first hole but encountered challenges with bogeys on the third and fifth holes, both par-3s. However, Cranston finished the front nine with three consecutive birdies.

After paring the first five holes on the back nine, Cranston faced a setback with a bogey on the 15th hole. She then had a double-bogey six on the par-4 17th hole but ended her round on a high note with a birdie on the par-4 18th hole.

Malia Nam, a graduate student at USC, and Rachel Heck, a senior at Stanford, currently find themselves tied for fourth place at 3-under, trailing the leader by six strokes.

The top 64 scores after 36 holes will advance to the match play stage, starting on Wednesday. In the event of a tie for the last match play spots, a playoff is scheduled for Tuesday evening.

The tournament’s grand finale will take place on Sunday, culminating in an exciting 36-hole final.
