Tory Lanez’s Father Appeals for Leniency in Sentencing for Shooting Megan Thee Stallion

Los Angeles-based rapper Tory Lanez is facing sentencing for shooting and injuring fellow hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion. Prosecutors are requesting a 13-year prison sentence for Lanez. During the court proceedings, Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, became emotional as he described the loss of Lanez’s mother when he was just 11 years old. Peterson, a Christian minister, explained that Lanez found solace in music after his mother’s death.

Numerous individuals, including Lanez’s family members and rapper Iggy Azalea, have provided statements affirming Lanez’s character and charitable acts. Even Lanez’s young son wrote a handwritten letter to the judge. Additionally, a chaplain from the Los Angeles County jail testified that Lanez has been leading daily prayer groups, contributing to a more peaceful environment in the protective custody unit where he has been held since his conviction in December.

During the proceedings, Peterson expressed regret for his emotional outburst condemning the “wicked system” after the verdict was announced. The judge, David Herriford, is expected to deliver Lanez’s sentence after further statements are made. Megan Thee Stallion may also provide a statement in court or have one read on her behalf.

Earlier in the day, the judge determined that Megan was an especially vulnerable victim but did not find Lanez to be particularly cruel or callous in his actions. These findings could influence the sentence that Herriford ultimately imposes.

Lanez’s lawyers have argued for probation and his release from jail so that he can enter a residential substance abuse program. They also plan to appeal his conviction. Lanez has been incarcerated since December, when a Los Angeles jury found him guilty of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

The incident occurred in the summer of 2020 after a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood Hills residence. Megan testified during the trial that Lanez fired the gun at the back of her feet and demanded that she dance as she walked away from their SUV. Lanez, who began releasing mixtapes in 2009 and rose to fame with major-label albums, has seen his career overshadowed by the allegations and charges against him.

The case against Lanez has also sparked discussions about misogynoir, a specific form of misogyny experienced by Black women. Despite the controversy surrounding Lanez, Megan Thee Stallion has continued to achieve success with Grammy wins and No. 1 singles.
