Rapper Tory Lanez’s Sentencing Date Scheduled in Megan Thee Stallion Shooting Incident

Canadian rapper Tory Lanez is facing sentencing on Monday after being convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the feet in the Hollywood Hills over three years ago. Prosecutors are seeking a 13-year prison sentence, while the defense is asking for probation.

Lanez was found guilty on December 23 of one felony count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

During a heated hearing in May, the judge denied the defense’s request for a new trial. Lanez’s new attorney, Jose Baez, criticized his previous trial attorney for inadequate preparation, calling the defense a “jumbled, bungled mess.”

In April, Lanez posted on Instagram, claiming innocence and accusing the prosecutors of suppressing exonerating evidence. He pleads for a fair judgment, highlighting the steps taken by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón in fighting for justice for minorities.

Lanez has been in custody since the verdict. Jurors deliberated for about seven hours before finding him guilty.

Megan Thee Stallion testified during the trial, recounting how Lanez shot her in the feet after telling her to “dance, bitch” during an argument. She had no doubt that he fired the shots and claimed he later offered her a bribe not to speak about the incident.

In an Elle magazine essay, Megan referred to herself as a survivor and expressed her resilience in overcoming the public humiliation caused by Lanez.

In the prosecution’s sentencing memorandum, they described Lanez’s actions as a brazen attack on a vulnerable victim and highlighted his ongoing efforts to humiliate and retraumatize Megan through social media posts.

Lanez’s new attorneys argue that he should be placed on probation and allowed to enter a residential treatment program. They claim he suffered from a mental condition and alcohol-use disorder at the time of the offense.
