Opinion | The Consequences of Idolizing Mike Pence as a Big Hero

Do you hold a different opinion?

Bret: I have always believed that the primary purpose of capital punishment is to serve justice. Therefore, even if the death penalty were proven to deter violent crime, that argument would not convince me. However, over the years, my stance has slightly softened. As I age, I believe it is unfair to completely eliminate the possibility of atonement and redemption in prison, especially for individuals who committed crimes when they were young.

Gail: That’s a valid point.

Bret: However, there are certain crimes that are so meticulously planned, filled with hate, and marked by extreme cruelty that I believe society must respond with the harshest possible punishment. The idea of justice is diminished when individuals sentenced to life in prison enjoy three meals a day, exercise time, friendships with other inmates, and even receive fan mail (which they will undoubtedly receive). I have no doubts that justice was served when war criminal Adolf Eichmann was hanged, or when serial killer Ted Bundy was executed, or when terrorist Timothy McVeigh was put to death through lethal injection. Bowers belongs in that same category.

Speaking of justice, what are your thoughts on Trump’s third indictment?

Gail: We have reached the crux of Trump’s criminal actions. As a nation, we can move past a president who breaks the law in his personal life, hides official documents, and conceals evidence of these acts. However, we cannot survive a president who actively attempts to undermine the electoral system and cling to power after being voted out of office.

This cannot be ignored. He must face consequences.

Bret: At the time, I believed the appropriate response to the events of January 6th was political, through immediate impeachment and conviction. I am concerned that this latest case will hinge on whether Donald Trump genuinely believed he had won the election and had the authority to have his vice president reject electoral ballots. In other words, it may revolve around Trump’s state of mind and his First Amendment rights, rather than focusing on the disgraceful nature of his actions. This increases the likelihood of an eventual acquittal.

Gail: All this drama keeps reminding me of Mike Pence — and believe me, I never thought I would find myself longing for any connection to Mike Pence in any way. But when the pivotal moment arrived, he followed through and declared the true winner of the election.
