`Meg 2′ Falls Behind `Barbie’ at the Box Office, Earning $53 Million

In a remarkable feat, director Greta Gerwig’s live-action film based on the iconic Mattel toy, “Barbie,” has maintained its position as the highest-grossing movie in North America, despite facing competition from two new releases. According to estimates released on Sunday, “Barbie” raked in $53 million over the weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings to over $459 million. It is worth noting that this female-directed film has also become the first to surpass the $1 billion milestone globally in just three weeks since its release.

Taking the second spot is the giant-shark film, “Meg 2: The Trench,” which opened with a solid $30 million. In third place, with $28.7 million, is “Oppenheimer” in its third week.

The fourth position is occupied by the latest installment of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” titled “Mutant Mayhem,” which debuted with $28 million. “Haunted Mansion” follows closely behind, with $8.9 million in its second weekend.

Completing the top 10 list, as reported by Comscore, are “Sound of Freedom” ($7 million), “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” ($6.4 million), “Talk To Me” ($6.2 million), “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani” ($1.529 million), and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” ($1.521 million).

The total box office earnings for this weekend across all movies is estimated at $176.4 million. The year-to-date total now stands at $6.1 billion, marking a remarkable 23% increase compared to the same period last year, according to Comscore.
