Barbie’s Success Soars, Surpassing $1B in Sales

Renowned filmmaker Greta Gerwig can now revel in her success. The film she directed and co-wrote, “Barbie,” has achieved a remarkable milestone within just three weeks of its theatrical release. It is on track to surpass $1 billion in global ticket sales, breaking Patty Jenkins’ record for female directors set by “Wonder Woman.” Studio estimates indicate that “Barbie” earned an additional $53 million from 4,178 locations in North America this weekend. It has maintained its top position for three consecutive weeks, and its impressive run is far from over. Warner Bros. announced that “Barbie” will cross the $1 billion mark by the end of the day, making it the highest-grossing film directed by a woman.

In the history of box office, only 53 movies have achieved the $1 billion milestone, not considering inflation. “Barbie” now holds the distinction of being the highest-grossing film directed by a woman, surpassing the $821.8 million global total of “Wonder Woman.” However, three films co-directed by women still remain ahead of “Barbie.” These include “Frozen” ($1.3 billion) and “Frozen 2” ($1.45 billion), both co-directed by Jennifer Lee, as well as “Captain Marvel” ($1.1 billion), co-directed by Anna Boden. Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” generated $28.7 million from 3,612 North American locations, bringing its total domestic earnings to $228.6 million. This biographical film also reached a significant milestone by crossing the $500 million mark globally within just three weeks. It now ranks among the top-grossing biographies ever and holds the title of the highest-grossing World War II movie of all time.
