Cyber researchers at Cyfirma have identified a sophisticated form of malware attacking the Google Play Store.

While similar to previous malware, this particular app is more dangerous due to its increased permissions and potential to extract personal information without the user’s knowledge.

Victims are deceived into downloading a dummy app that allows threat actors to access their private texts before they realize what has happened.

Although the app has been removed from the Play Store, it may still be present on Android devices that downloaded it prior to its removal.

Users must manually delete the app, ironically called SafeChat, to ensure their data is secure.

The Indian hacking group known as ‘Bahamut’ is believed to have injected the app with spyware capable of stealing texts, call logs, and GPS locations from infected phones.

According to Cyfirma, Bahamut has been active since 2017 and targets various platforms, including iOS, Android, and Windows.

Last year, the group used fake VPN apps for Android to extract sensitive user data and spy on messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Signal, Viber, and Telegram.

ESET researchers discovered multiple versions of Bahamut spyware, suggesting an ongoing campaign. These malicious apps were never available for download on Google Play.
