Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently discussed the stalled sequel to DC Studios’ “Black Adam” and attributed it to a period of transition in the company’s leadership. In an episode of Kevin Hart’s talk show “Hart to Heart,” Johnson talked about the changes that occurred when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios.
During the development and production of “Black Adam,” Johnson explained that there were significant shifts in leadership within the company. He emphasized that when a publicly traded company goes through such changes, new leaders may make decisions that don’t align with the creative and financial vision of the project. Johnson believes that “Black Adam” was unfortunately caught in this situation.
Despite the challenges, “Black Adam” achieved the best opening weekend of Johnson’s career, earning $67 million at the box office. However, some publications considered the film a disappointment as it fell short of the estimated $560 to $600 million needed to break even. According to IMDbPro’s Box Office Mojo, the film made $393 million worldwide during its release.
In December, Johnson revealed that the Black Adam character would not be part of DC Studios’ initial storytelling chapter, citing James Gunn. Despite this setback, Johnson expressed pride in the film, which had been in the works for years.
Reflecting on the dropped sequel, Johnson called it one of the biggest mysteries. He highlighted the success of the first film and the potential for growth by expanding the superhero franchise. He mentioned the inclusion of Superman and Henry Cavill, which generated excitement among fans. Johnson also emphasized the importance of creating a diverse superhero portfolio with films like “Black Adam” and its planned sequel, featuring men and women of color.
