Gilas Pilipinas Women suffered a late defeat against Chinese-Taipei A, losing 89-85 in their opening game of the 42nd Jones Cup on Saturday night.
After a shaky start, the Philippines rallied and tied the game at 83-all with one minute left in the contest at Taipei Peace Basketball Hall.
Afril Bernardino, a veteran player, missed a crucial free throw that would have given the Nationals the lead, allowing the opponent to secure the victory.
Leading the way for Gilas Pilipinas Women was Janine Pontejos with 19 points, followed by newcomer Kacey dela Rosa with 17 points and seven rebounds.
Jack Danielle Animam, a key player for Gilas, contributed 13 points, five rebounds, and four steals, while Jhaz Joson, who made a name for herself in the Asia Cup, also had 13 points.
Bernardino finished with four points and five rebounds.
Chinese-Taipei’s Chen Yanyu scored 20 points, while Lin Yuting, Zheng Yixiu, and Chen Wei’an all scored at least 13 points to make an impressive debut in front of their home crowd.
Coach Pat Aquino and his team will face Iran at 3 p.m. on Sunday for their next game.
