Unveiling the Hidden Truth about My “Wingman” Reveals Surprising Details about Friendship

Introducing the new feature on Fox News articles: audio versions! Now you can listen to our articles and get the latest news while on the go. To start off, let’s discuss the importance of close friendships.

In therapy sessions, my friend often asks married couples to talk about their three closest friends. The wife usually has no problem listing them, while the husband often finds himself at a loss. The concept of “closest friends” may seem foreign to some men, but it’s crucial to understand its significance.

Men, whether married or single, need a companion, a wingman, to navigate life’s adventures. No one should have to face challenges alone. The term “wingman” comes from the military, specifically referring to a pilot positioned beside and behind a leading aircraft in formation. Just imagining these jets flying in perfect harmony at high speeds gives off an adrenaline rush.

As someone who appreciates cinematic tenderness and the idea of close friendships, I found myself captivated by the recent movie “Top Gun: Maverick.” While the exhilarating jet sequences were thrilling, it was the portrayal of deep friendship that resonated with me the most.

In the film, the main character, Maverick, visits his fellow pilot, Iceman, who is battling throat cancer. Despite their past rivalry, they show us what being a true wingman looks like, both in and out of the sky. The emotional scene between them touched my heart, reminding me of the significance of authentic friendship.

I personally discovered the value of a wingman on February 14, 2012. I was taking my wife and daughter to the hospital for a life-changing appointment. As we entered the lobby, our pastor, Dr. David Swanson, was there to support us. He promised to be my wingman throughout this challenging ordeal, and that moment will forever be etched in my memory.

To all men, whether single or married, I want to emphasize the importance of having a friend, a companion, a wingman. We shouldn’t navigate life’s ups and downs alone. Seeking support from a close friend can make all the difference. Such friendships don’t necessarily involve fighter jets and high-risk situations, but they carry their own risks and drama, ultimately leading to growth and support.

While I may currently be physically far from my wingman, I have found ways to cultivate new friendships and maintain existing ones. Meeting up for breakfast with a local friend or connecting through technology, like sending daily inspirational Bible verses to friends via text messages, has helped me stay connected and build meaningful relationships.

These interactions may not be as dramatic as the jet flyovers or heartfelt movie scenes, but they serve as reminders of the importance of having a wingman by your side. It’s through these gestures of support, encouragement, and keeping each other updated on life’s happenings that we truly embody the essence of being a wingman.

So, fellow men, let’s embrace the idea of having a friend, a wingman, who will be there for us in times of need. Let’s cultivate meaningful friendships and support one another through life’s journey. Remember, you don’t have to fly solo.
