During a UN Women’s event in 2015, Meghan expressed her reaction upon witnessing a Procter & Gamble commercial that propagated the notion that women were solely responsible for doing the dishes at home. The commercial featured the tagline, “Women are fighting greasy pots and pans with Ivory Soap.”

“… Two boys from my class said, ‘Yeah, that’s where women belong, in the kitchen,'” she articulated during her speech. “I distinctly remember feeling shocked, angry, and deeply hurt — it was simply unfair, and something needed to be addressed.”

“So, I confided in my father and shared what had happened, and he encouraged me to take action by writing letters, and so I did,” she continued.

That’s exactly what Meghan did. She wrote letters to the first lady at that time, Hillary Clinton, TV journalist Linda Ellerbee, attorney Gloria Allred, and Procter & Gamble. These influential women responded to Meghan, commending her for speaking up. The company also revised its advertisement’s messaging.

A few years later, in 1999, Meghan would make another appearance in front of the camera — she made her debut in a music video for Tori Amos’ 1999 hit song “1000 Oceans.”
