The Bonny Fire in and around Aguanga is nearing full containment, with the Riverside County Fire Department reporting that it is 95% contained as of Friday. Full containment is expected by Monday. This update comes after a brief halt in containment progress during Thursday’s update. However, firefighters have made significant progress overnight, reinforcing containment lines and addressing hot spots, leading to the cancellation of all mandatory evacuation orders on Wednesday.
According to the Riverside County Fire Department, evacuation orders for properties north of the San Diego County line and south of Ramsey Road have been lifted as of Wednesday at 3 p.m. However, evacuation warnings are still in effect for the area south of Bowers Road, north of Rim Rock Road, east of Bonny Lane, and west of Chapman Road.
As efforts continue to contain the Bonny Fire, crews are being redirected to other nearby brush fires in Sage and Cabazon. The Bonny Fire started on July 27 near Bonny and Barber Lanes, on the outskirts of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation. It quickly approached Chapman and Johnston Roads, but thanks to the swift response from Cal Fire air tankers and water-dropping helicopters, several homes were protected from the flames. Unfortunately, one outbuilding and a vehicle were destroyed. Fortunately, there have been no serious injuries reported among the firefighters, although one firefighter did sustain minor injuries over the weekend.
At its peak, approximately 2,000 personnel, including county engine and hand crews, as well as various strike teams and firefighters from different agencies, were deployed to combat the Bonny Fire. Hot shot crews from Kern County were also dispatched to assist in the sparsely populated area. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
