Ford is conducting a recall of over 870,000 F-150 trucks due to a potential safety issue with the electronic parking brake. This recall affects certain 2021-2023 models equipped with single-pipe exhaust systems. The issue stems from a wiring harness in some of the trucks rubbing against the rear axle housing, gradually wearing away the insulation on the wires. Corrosion on the axle housing may exacerbate this problem, as stated in documents found on the NHTSA website.
To address this issue, Ford advises owners to bring their trucks to an authorized dealer. The dealer will then perform necessary repairs, including the installation of a protective tie strap and tape wrap to the wiring harness. If required, the dealer will also replace the wiring harness. Ford launched an investigation into this matter in late February after receiving multiple complaints regarding unintended parking brake activation in 2021 model-year trucks. It was discovered that the chafing on wiring harnesses connected to the parking brake had worn through the abrasion-resistant tape. This investigation led to the recall.
Since the start of this issue, Ford has been notified of 299 instances where the parking brake activated unintentionally, with 19 of these occurrences happening while the vehicle was in motion. Thankfully, there have been no reported accidents or injuries related to this problem.
