In a formal ceremony, the Los Angeles City Council enthusiastically embraced Imelda Padilla as a voting member and confirmed her triumph in the Sixth District special election.
Padilla had been appointed as a temporary voting member on July 5 while awaiting the certification of her victory over Marisa Alcaraz, a council aide, by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office.
Surrounded by her family, Padilla took her oath of office, expressing her readiness to advocate for the Sixth District and serve as its voting member.
During the council meeting, Padilla took a moment to thank her mother for always supporting her. She characterized her family as hardworking and pledged to continue their tradition as she assumes her new role. She emphasized her commitment to coalition building and fulfilling her promises to her constituents.
Congratulating Padilla, former council representative Rep. Tony Cárdenas, D-Los Angeles, hailed her appointment as a fresh start for leadership and representation in the council. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, representing the neighboring Seventh District, expressed gratitude to Cárdenas for joining in the celebration.
Rodriguez emphasized that their presence on the council was the result of hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to serve their community. She credited the community for embracing and shaping them into who they are today.
Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez expressed gratitude for Padilla’s presence and recognized that her appointment marked an even higher representation of women in the council. Councilwoman Traci Park expressed eagerness to collaborate on various projects in the Council Chamber.
As a community relations manager, the 36-year-old Padilla will serve out the remainder of former Council President Nury Martinez’s term until December 2024. Martinez had resigned in October following the revelation of racist comments she made during a secretly recorded meeting.
The Sixth District includes Van Nuys, Arleta, Lake Balboa, Panorama City, Sun Valley, and parts of North Hills and North Hollywood.
The Council unanimously voted 12-0, with councilmen Curren Price, Tim McOsker, and Paul Krekorian absent, to certify the election results and officially welcome Padilla as a member.
