Identity Theft Scheme Leads to Accusations Against Two Orange County Residents

Two individuals residing in Orange County are facing federal charges for their involvement in an elaborate identity theft scheme in which they attempted to steal over $2 million, according to prosecutors who announced the case on Tuesday.

The accused individuals, Thao Thi Kim Nguyen (47) from Garden Grove, and Nghiep Chinh Nguyen (55) from Westminster, were released on bond after being arraigned in federal court in Santa Ana on Monday. They were indicted by a grand jury last week.

The charges against them include conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, with additional charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft for Thao Nguyen, and further charges of bank fraud and aggravated identity theft for Nghiep Nguyen.

According to prosecutors, Thao Nguyen opened accounts in her own name at two banks over a four-month period in 2018 to deposit the stolen funds.

The accused individuals, along with others, would visit the bank and pretend to be victim homeowners whose identities had been stolen. Allegedly, they would forge the signatures of the actual homeowners in order to obtain cash-out mortgages on the properties.

The prosecutors claim that counterfeit driver’s licenses and Social Security cards, along with forged signatures, were utilized in this fraudulent scheme.

The indictment states that they accumulated a total of $2,182,753 through this fraudulent scheme.
