The historic indictment against Donald Trump in the special counsel’s probe into the events of January 6, 2021, and attempts to overturn the 2020 election alleges that he sought assistance from co-conspirators in committing criminal acts.
The charging documents refrain from disclosing the identities of six co-conspirators, a common practice when they have not been formally charged with any crimes.
However, CNN has been able to identify five of these co-conspirators based on statements in the indictment and surrounding context:
Co-Conspirator 1 is none other than former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
The indictment cites a voicemail left by Co-Conspirator 1 for a United States Senator on January 6, 2021. The quotes within the indictment align with quotes from Giuliani’s call intended for GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville, as reported by CNN and other news outlets.
Co-Conspirator 2 is former Trump lawyer John Eastman.
The indictment states that Co-Conspirator 2 circulated a two-page memorandum detailing a plan for Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the 2020 election during the Electoral College certification on January 6, 2021. This aligns with quotes from the memo, which match a two-page memo authored by Eastman, as reported and published by CNN.
Co-Conspirator 3 is former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell.
According to the indictment, Co-Conspirator 3 filed a lawsuit against Georgia Governor Brian Kemp on November 25, 2020, alleging significant election fraud. The lawsuit was eventually dismissed on December 7, 2020. These dates and quotations match the details of the federal lawsuit filed by Powell against Governor Kemp, as recorded in the Healthy Elections Case Tracker.
Co-Conspirator 4 is former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark.
The indictment identifies Co-Conspirator 4 as a Justice Department official and quotes an email from a high-ranking Justice Department official refuting Clark’s attempts to manipulate the department for election interference. These quotes align with an email sent to Clark, as detailed in a Senate report on Trump’s efforts to leverage the Justice Department in 2020.
Co-Conspirator 5 is pro-Trump lawyer Kenneth Chesebro.
The indictment references an email memorandum sent by Co-Conspirator 5 to Rudy Giuliani on December 13, 2020, regarding the fake electors plot. The details of the sender, recipient, date, and content perfectly align with an email sent by Chesebro to Giuliani, as disclosed in a publicly available copy of the email provided by the House select committee that investigated the events of January 6.
The identity of Co-Conspirator 6 remains uncertain.
The indictment describes this individual as a political consultant involved in a plan to submit fraudulent slates of presidential electors to obstruct the certification proceedings. Furthermore, the indictment links this person to the fake elector slate in Pennsylvania.
