Amazon expands availability of its virtual health clinic across the country

Amazon is launching its nationwide virtual health clinic service, known as Amazon Clinic. The service, introduced last November, allows users to connect with healthcare providers for the treatment of common conditions such as sinus infections, acne, and migraines. Users can select their condition, choose a provider, and complete a brief questionnaire. Depending on their location, users have the option to connect with a clinician through video or text message.

It’s important to note that Amazon does not directly provide the telemedicine services itself. Instead, Amazon Clinic serves as a platform that connects telemedicine partners with patients. Some of the current partners include Curai Health, Hello Alpha, SteadyMD, and Wheel.

With this recent announcement, individuals from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. can access Amazon Clinic for video visits. However, due to regulatory constraints, message-based chat is only available in 32 states.

To ensure quality and timely care, Amazon Clinic thoroughly vets each provider and their internal operations. The company also ensures that the provider groups are present across all 50 states.

Although Amazon Clinic currently does not accept insurance, consumers can use their insurance to cover medication costs prescribed through the service. Prescriptions can be filled at any pharmacy, including Amazon’s own online pharmacy, which handles fulfillment and delivery.

The number of users who have signed up for Amazon Clinic remains undisclosed. Over the years, Amazon has made various attempts to penetrate the healthcare industry with mixed success. It launched its online pharmacy in 2020 after acquiring PillPack in 2018. Amazon also introduced and later discontinued its telehealth service called Amazon Care. Additionally, the company completed the acquisition of healthcare provider OneMedical for $3.9 billion earlier this year. In 2018, Amazon collaborated with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan to establish an incubator aimed at enhancing employer health programs, but ultimately shut it down after three years.

In summary, Amazon’s nationwide virtual health clinic service, Amazon Clinic, offers users the convenience of connecting with healthcare providers for the treatment of common ailments. The platform connects users with trusted telemedicine partners and provides options for video visits and message-based chat. Although insurance is not currently accepted, prescriptions can be filled through various pharmacies, including Amazon’s own online pharmacy. Despite previous endeavors in the healthcare industry, Amazon continues to innovate in this space to provide accessible and comprehensive healthcare solutions.
