Newcomer Producer Alden’s Valuable Lessons: Losing Money and Embracing Tough Learning Experiences

Alden Richards, known for his showbiz endeavors, has been diligently expanding his portfolio beyond the limelight. Apart from his acting projects, he has delved into the food industry by establishing his own restaurants and acquiring fast food franchises. Furthermore, he has ventured into production through his own company, Myriad Entertainment Corporation, which financially supports the creation of films and organizes E-sports events and live concerts. In fact, his company recently sponsored the highly anticipated reunion concert of the iconic band, Eraserheads, in December.

While Alden is relishing this new aspect of his career, he openly admits that the journey can be tough. He had to learn the ropes the hard way. “Even before the official formation of Myriad, I was already involved in organizing online gaming events. However, it was a wake-up call for me. Money was flowing out, but there was no profit. I failed to see the potential,” Alden shared in a recent virtual conference with the Inquirer. “I would organize tournaments, bring together players, and distribute cash prizes ranging from P30,000 to P10,000. I even raffled off gadgets and a motorcycle. As long as I was happy, nothing else mattered,” he recounted. However, he soon came to realize that happiness alone doesn’t guarantee success in business. One valuable lesson Alden learned from this experience is that important decisions should not be made impulsively or based on heightened emotions. “You need to stay neutral. Whether you’re sad, angry, or happy, you can’t make crucial decisions. You have to thoroughly consider all angles, weigh the pros and cons,” he emphasized. “I wish I could have made my earlier ventures profitable, but I am learning,” he added.

Another crucial skill, according to Alden, is the ability to graciously say “no.” “Production requires financial resources. Opportunities are now pouring in for us, but I am learning to decline some of them. While I am grateful for the potential partnerships, I have to carefully assess if our finances can handle them,” Alden explained, referring to his company, Myriad, which will be organizing his upcoming concert and co-producing his movie with Julia Montes, “Five Breakups and a Romance.” “What I have learned is that even if you have the resources, it doesn’t mean you should always be open for funding,” he added. Despite the challenges, Alden finds fulfillment in bringing entertainment to people and ensuring they feel satisfied with what they’ve experienced. “Mounting shows is tough, but at the end of the day, I am committed to exerting the necessary effort to make the audience happy and feel that their money was well-spent,” he affirmed.

One aspect that Alden loves about production is the creative freedom it gives him to pursue projects that truly resonate with him. He didn’t always have this privilege at the start of his career. However, now that he has proven himself as an actor, he has gained the authority to choose the roles he plays and the stories he takes on. As an example, the month-long special of the drama anthology “Magpakailanman” will feature Alden exclusively. For all four episodes in August, Alden specifically handpicked the stories he believes will be the most challenging for him. “I didn’t have this option before. I couldn’t afford to be selective with my roles because I needed to prove myself. In my first seven years, I accepted whatever was given to me without question. But as the people around you and your bosses witness your hard work, there will come a time when your efforts will be reciprocated,” Alden shared.

Each role presents unique challenges, and Alden thoroughly enjoys the process of reinventing himself. “None of them are similar. However, I’m always looking for something unconventional. I believe in constantly evolving and pushing myself. When you stick to roles that make you comfortable, that’s when stagnation sets in as an actor. I had the opportunity to choose my roles, and I deliberately picked the more difficult ones,” Alden revealed. He also personally requested Sanya Lopez to be his co-star in the episode “The Runner.” Although they haven’t worked together before, Alden has seen her shows and was curious about their potential on-screen chemistry.

Despite being one of GMA 7’s top stars, Alden doesn’t allow himself to become complacent. He constantly seeks challenges and refuses to rest on his laurels. “I want to push myself, not settle for mediocrity. When you stick to your comfort zone, it’s the death of an actor. I was given the opportunity to choose my roles, and I opted for the more demanding ones,” Alden expressed.
