A juvenile resident at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey has returned to the facility on Saturday following an escape during a altercation with detention staff members that led to a significant police response.
After receiving a report of one youth assaulting a staff member at the recently reopened facility, officers from the Downey Police Department, Downey Fire Department, the South Gate Police Department, and deputies from the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station promptly arrived at the juvenile hall around 9 p.m. on Friday.
According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Probation Department, the escaped youth was swiftly apprehended by Probation Special Enforcement Operations officers.
“Both the youth and the staff members affected by the disturbance are currently being evaluated by medical personnel. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported among the youth or staff,” she informed City News Service. “We have confirmed that all youth are accounted for.”
After learning that one of the juveniles housed at the facility had escaped during the altercation, officers and deputies conducted searches in nearby neighborhoods and at Los Amigos Golf Course.
This month, Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall reopened and welcomed 274 pre-disposition youths who were previously housed at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall in Sylmar and Central Juvenile Hall in Boyle Heights. The 26-acre campus in Downey now serves as their new location.
