Victor Bryan, an estate agent from Buckinghamshire, shared his regret about having an artificial lawn installed. He expressed that the problems with his fake lawn became apparent during the summer months. The smell of urine and discomfort underfoot were major drawbacks, particularly for families with children and pets.
In terms of regional preferences, Bristol is the city most supportive of a ban on fake lawns, while Newcastle shows the least concern. The negative portrayal of artificial grass and the Welsh Government’s attempt to introduce a ban have contributed to the growing public aversion towards fake lawns.
Expert landscaper James Lewis, working with MyBuilder, observed that more individuals are choosing against installing artificial grass due to concerns over its environmental impact. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that there are still benefits to having a synthetic lawn, advising potential buyers to carefully consider the pros and cons before making a decision.
The advantages of fake lawns include low maintenance, as they do not require mowing, watering, or reseeding. Additionally, they can maintain an attractive appearance throughout the year without experiencing issues like brown spots or muddy patches that natural grass often encounters.
However, there are several downsides to consider. The cost of purchasing and installing an artificial lawn can be significant. Moreover, they can heat up significantly in hot weather, posing a risk of burns, especially for children and pets. Drainage is another concern, as synthetic lawns do not handle water as effectively as real grass. This can cause problems in flood-prone areas or during the summer months when using paddling pools. Lastly, the removal of natural grass for artificial substitutes negatively impacts the environment and disrupts habitats for various organisms.
