Report: Investigators Unearth Second Crack on North Carolina Roller Coaster

  • A second crack has been discovered in a roller coaster at Carowinds, the North Carolina amusement park, as reported by CNN.
  • A visitor alerted park employees about the crack, leading to the temporary closure of the roller coaster, named Fury 325.
  • The ride will remain closed until further notice.

A crack in one of the steel support beams of the Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds was discovered by a visitor, leading to its temporary closure earlier this month.

An investigation by the North Carolina Department of Labor revealed a second break, as reported by CNN. State officials found a “weld indication,” which could signify a break or a crack. The location and severity of the flaw were not disclosed.

Representatives from the department have not responded to Insider’s request for comment.

In a statement to WCNC, a Carowinds representative mentioned that the park is conducting a comprehensive maintenance review of the ride’s steel structure, cars, and ride control system. Insider’s request for comment from the park is pending.

According to Carowinds’ website, Fury 325 is the tallest, fastest, and longest giga coaster in North America. It reaches a height of 325 feet, a maximum speed of 95 miles per hour, and lasts just over three minutes.

This is not the first time Fury 325 has faced scrutiny. In 2015, the state examined the ride after it unexpectedly stopped near the top of one of its steepest drops.
