- In December of last year, I had the opportunity to visit Paris for the very first time, and I was absolutely captivated by the city’s stunning beauty.
- Recently, I came across a TikTok video that seemed to criticize Paris, and I was taken aback by its viral success.
- From my personal experience, I found Paris to be a city filled with delicious yet affordable food, rich culture, and vibrant nightlife.
The concept of “Paris syndrome” refers to the feeling of disappointment when visiting Paris for the first time, realizing that it may not live up to your idealized expectations of its beauty and enchantment.
During my own visit to Paris last year, I was completely amazed by how the city exceeded all of my expectations. The festive atmosphere during Christmas week, along with the wide array of activities available to explore, truly delighted me.
From indulging in affordable and mouthwatering meals to the awe-inspiring experience of touring the Palace of Versailles, my trip to Paris was far from disappointing.
Therefore, it came as a surprise to stumble upon a viral TikTok video criticizing the city for being overrated and lacking in attractions
In the video, posted by an American TikToker named Malfoy (@Malfoy_Draco), who has garnered over 36 million views since sharing it on July 10, he expresses his distaste for Paris’ nightlife, the perceived lack of things to do, the prevalence of American fast-food chains, and what he describes as the city’s “grimy” streets.
Malfoy states in the video, “It smells like piss, cheese, and armpits. You will see a café on every corner because there are no activities here, and the food is so average.”
This video made me reflect on my own Parisian experience, which was drastically different
During my time in Paris, I was captivated by the remarkable architecture, the abundance of museums, and the enchanting Christmas markets. I strolled through charming cobblestone streets, stopping at delightful patisseries and cheese shops. I admired the Christmas lights illuminating the facades of department stores and the Champs-Élysées. I stood in a room where Marie Antoinette once slept. I eagerly waited to witness the sparkling lights of the Eiffel Tower at night and cheered when it lit up.
Despite the video’s claim, I spent hours seated at cozy cafés, observing the fashionable locals passing by, never once feeling that it detracted from the city or my experience.
In addition to exploring central Paris, as showcased in the video, I also thoroughly enjoyed venturing into the neighboring areas of Montmartre and the town of Versailles, located just beyond the palace.
In my opinion, the culinary scene in Paris was not only more affordable but also superior to that of New York City
Thanks to extensive research and planning, almost every meal I enjoyed in Paris was as good, if not better, than those I have had in New York City.
Among my favorite culinary experiences during the trip was indulging in a truffle pasta dish at Libertino and savoring mussels with chorizo at Au Pied de Cochon, a restaurant beloved by Julia Child that played a role in her fondness for French cuisine. While these restaurants were on the slightly pricier side, I didn’t find them to be exorbitantly expensive.
Furthermore, I discovered that I could also dine affordably by exploring the local street-food scene. At the Christmas markets, which spring up throughout the city during the holiday season, I delighted in mulled wine and potatoes smothered in gooey raclette cheese, both of which were incredibly affordable.
As for activities, I was never bored during my time in Paris.
My itinerary included a walking tour that delved into Paris’ history during World War II, a visit to the Palace of Versailles, and a scenic river cruise along the Seine.
In between these planned activities, there was ample time for shopping, café hopping, museum visits, and simply reveling in the beauty of my surroundings.
Everywhere I looked, there was something breathtaking or enticing.
My week-long trip left me yearning to return, and I have already made plans to spend Christmas in Paris once again this year
While I understand that certain individuals may have negative opinions of Paris based on their own experiences, and I am aware of the significant social and economic challenges faced by many Parisians, I found that many of the downsides I encountered as a visitor are common in any major city.
For instance, just like @Malfoy_Draco’s TikTok video depicted, I frequently encounter flocks of pigeons and encounter trash on the sidewalks during my time in New York City. However, this doesn’t diminish my love for the city.
