Randy Meisner, the original bassist of the Eagles and the writer and lead singer of their iconic hit “Take It to the Limit,” has passed away at the age of 77, according to CNN. The Eagles released a statement on Thursday confirming the news, stating that Meisner died in Los Angeles due to complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The band expressed their sadness over the loss and acknowledged Meisner’s integral role in the band’s early success. They praised his astonishing vocal range, which is evident in his signature ballad, “Take It to the Limit.”
Before his time with the Eagles, Meisner played with Poco and Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band, as reported by People. He co-founded the Eagles in 1971 alongside Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Bernie Leadon. In 1976, Meisner left the band due to exhaustion from touring but reunited with them for their 1998 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Although he was invited to join the band’s 2013 world tour, he declined due to health reasons. Frey, another founding member, passed away in 2016 at the age of 67, and Leadon left the band in 1975. The current lineup for the band’s farewell tour includes its last remaining original member, Henley, along with Timothy B.
