Alabama police have charged Carlee Russell for involvement in a kidnapping hoax, which she has now confessed to fabricating.

Russell, who is a 25-year-old nursing student, allegedly went missing on July 13 after making a 911 call claiming to have seen a toddler on the side of the road.

After reappearing at home 49 hours later, Russell claimed she had been kidnapped. Her case received extensive media coverage.

However, Russell’s lawyer revealed that she had lied about witnessing the baby on the roadside and being kidnapped.

She now faces charges of false reporting to law enforcement authorities and falsely reporting an incident, both of which are considered misdemeanors, according to a statement issued by Hoover Alabama police.

A mugshot of a smiling Russell was released by the police department. She was booked in the Hoover City Jail on Friday but has since been released on bond.

Russell’s attorney, Emory Anthony, has not responded to Insider’s request for comment. NBC News reported that Anthony stated, “All we can do now is wait for the court date and see how we go from there.”

“She realized that, although it’s two misdemeanors, it’s still a serious offense,” Anthony said, according to NBC News. “She understands that.”
