Home Office accused of racism for barring Siyabonga Twala’s re-entry

The Home Office and secretary of state have reached a new low with the decision to exclude Siyabonga Twala from the country, leaving him stranded in Turkey (Suella Braverman refuses plea of man barred from UK to be reunited with son, 23 July).

The law utilized to bar Siyabonga was initially created to prevent dangerous criminals from entering the UK. However, its deployment against a person with a minor spent conviction, who has not offended before or since, who has deep roots in the UK, including a family, job, and home, can only be described as institutional racism. This stands in stark contrast to the countless stories we regularly hear about middle-class individuals or celebrities involved in drug-related activities.

Institutional racism was aptly defined in the 1999 Macpherson report as “The collective failure of an organization to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their color, culture, or ethnic origin. It can be seen or detected in processes, attitudes, and behavior which amount to discrimination through unwitting prejudice, ignorance, thoughtlessness, and racist stereotyping…”

The Windrush generation continues to face unwarranted criminalization and victimization by the Home Office. Compensation for the state-sponsored miscarriage of justice is still delayed, with victims even passing away before their claims can be settled. Yet, amidst all this, the home secretary has taken the time to separate a nine-year-old boy from his father.
