A group of migrants from Texas arrived at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, marking the sixth group to arrive since June 14.
The bus arrived at around 8:50 a.m., as confirmed by Mayor Karen Bass’ office.
“To ensure a smooth reception, the city has been collaborating with various city departments, the county, nonprofit organizations, and our faith partners. This plan was put in place earlier this year and has been activated upon learning about the arrival of the bus,” stated Zach Seidl, spokesperson for the mayor.
The group, consisting of 15 men, eight women, and 13 children aged between 2 and 17, was welcomed at nearby St. Anthony’s Croatian Church by city officials and immigrant-support groups for an orientation. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) reported these details.
“Apart from providing immediate humanitarian support services like food, water, clothing, hygiene kits, and legal immigration guidance, we will also ensure that these asylum seekers are connected with their loved ones, family members, or sponsors in the region,” stated CHIRLA.
According to CHIRLA, the asylum-seekers come from Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela, with the largest contingents from Mexico and Venezuela.
The total number of immigrants bused from Texas to Los Angeles now stands at 234, with the addition of Thursday’s group, according to CHIRLA.
Claiming that the border region of Texas is overwhelmed by immigrants crossing from Mexico, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been coordinating the shipment of migrants to California.
“Texas’ small border towns are currently overwhelmed and overrun by thousands of people who are illegally crossing into Texas from Mexico due to President Biden’s failure to secure the border,” stated Abbott in response to the first bus’s arrival in Los Angeles back in June. “Migrants are drawn to major cities like Los Angeles, especially now that it has declared itself a sanctuary city. As long as President Biden continues to neglect his duty of securing the border, Texas will continue to provide this much-needed relief to our border communities.”
In June, the Los Angeles City Council passed a motion unanimously, instructing the city to draft a “Sanctuary City” ordinance that would prohibit the use of any city resources, property, or personnel for federal immigration enforcement purposes.
