Help Wanted: As the ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA continue to drag on, major entertainment companies are now looking to fill positions in the AI field. The Hollywood Reporter recently reviewed job listings and discovered a number of open positions related to AI within Disney. Despite recently laying off thousands of employees, Disney is currently offering approximately six positions focused on AI and machine learning. These positions include opportunities with Disney’s “Imagineering” team, responsible for creating attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. One specific job, the R&D Imagineer, is seeking someone with the ambition to push the boundaries of AI tools and differentiate between the voice of data and that of a designer, writer, or artist. Additionally, Disney plans to collaborate with external organizations, universities, studios, and developers to implement the latest generative AI. Other major studios and streaming services, such as Netflix, are also aggressively hiring in the AI sector to expand their technological reach.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the selected candidate for one of these positions at Disney can expect a base salary of up to $180,000 per year, with the possibility of bonuses or additional compensation. One particularly intriguing opportunity at Disney is for a machine learning engineer in the Disney Streaming Advanced Research division, responsible for implementing AI-driven solutions for Disney+, Star+, and ESPN+. This role will involve working on advanced personalization efforts, including digital avatars. Netflix, on the other hand, recently faced criticism from The Intercept for offering up to $900,000 for an AI Product Manager position. Notably, Netflix emphasizes that their business heavily relies on machine learning and AI, as it drives innovation in content creation, personalization, payment processing, and other revenue-centric initiatives. The company also has various other AI and machine learning job openings.
Moreover, the demand for AI expertise extends beyond content production and research. Major companies such as Amazon and Apple are also seeking AI and ML professionals to enrich their media businesses. For instance, Amazon is advertising a listing for a senior project manager for Prime Video, who will have the opportunity to define the next big thing in localizing content, enhancing content, and making it accessible using cutting-edge Generative AI and Computer Vision technology. This position offers a base salary of up to $300,000. Sony, too, is actively recruiting for an AI “Ethics” engineer. They aim to advance AI technologies that empower artists, makers, and creators, and ensure that AI works harmoniously with humans for the benefit of society.
While the industry faces strikes and concerns over the increased use of AI, Disney CEO Bob Iger remains unafraid to publicly acknowledge the company’s embrace of AI. At a town hall meeting last November, he confidently stated that technological advancement cannot be stopped. He acknowledged that at some point in the future, Disney will fully embrace AI technology. However, actor Bryan Cranston, known for his role in “Breaking Bad,” recently called out Bob Iger during a rally in Times Square, urging him to listen to the concerns of those on strike who fear their jobs will be replaced by robots. In the face of these criticisms, Disney continues its push into the AI realm.
