Aide Responsible for Video Containing Nazi Imagery Dismissed from DeSantis Campaign

The Ron DeSantis campaign has terminated an aide who produced a pro-DeSantis advertisement that incorporated visuals associated with Nazis. According to Axios, speechwriter Nate Hochman created the 68-second video without authorization and shared it on a pro-DeSantis Twitter account. The video features the “Wojak” meme, known as a “sad-looking man popular on the right” by The Guardian, expressing dismay over Trump policies and then becoming cheerful upon hearing DeSantis-related headlines. Towards the end, the video showcases lines of soldiers marching towards a Florida state seal, which ultimately transforms into a spinning Sonnenrad, also known as a sun-wheel.

The Sonnenrad is an ancient symbol originally used in Europe, but was later “appropriated by the Nazis in their attempt to invent an idealized ‘Aryan/Norse’ heritage,” as reported by the BBC. The tweet containing the video was deleted after objections were raised about the imagery, although a copy can still be viewed here. Hochman, a 25-year-old writer for National Review, was one of several DeSantis staffers who were let go this week, according to Semafor. It remains unclear whether his dismissal was directly related to the video. The campaign released a statement saying, “Nate Hochman is no longer with the campaign. And we will not be commenting on him further.” (Read more Ron DeSantis 2024 stories.)
