Renowned Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, who shot to fame in the 1990s with her iconic song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” has passed away at 56 years old, according to a statement from her family reported by Irish national broadcaster RTE.
The statement read, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
O’Connor was known for her bold and outspoken personality, challenging traditional notions of femininity and sexuality with her signature shaved head, intense expression, and unconventional style. In the early 1990s, she revolutionized the image of women in the music industry.
She gained global recognition with her captivating rendition of the song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” originally written by Prince. The accompanying music video has amassed nearly 400 million views on YouTube.
Beyond her musical talent, O’Connor made headlines for her outspoken views on various topics, including religion, sex, feminism, and war. She famously tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II during a live television appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”
In her 2021 memoir, “Rememberings,” she wrote, “Everyone wants a pop star, see? But I am a protest singer. I just had stuff to get off my chest. I had no desire for fame.”
In 2018, O’Connor announced her conversion to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada Sadaqat, while still continuing to perform under the name Sinead O’Connor.
“Her music was loved around the world, and her talent was unparalleled,” expressed Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar on the messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, as he extended his condolences to all who cherished her music.
