It’s Barbie’s world and we’re just living in it.

The Warner Bros. flick based on Mattel’s iconic fashion doll continued to achieve record-breaking ticket sales following its historic opening weekend.

On Monday, “Barbie” added $26 million to its earnings, marking the biggest Monday in Warner Bros.’ history and the highest ever for a female director. Greta Gerwig’s bubblegum pink feature generated an additional $26 million on Tuesday, pushing its domestic box office total to $214 million.

“Barbie” surpassed expectations during its opening weekend, raking in $162 million in three days at domestic theaters. This marks the highest-grossing debut for a female director in cinema history.

Less than 100 films have ever crossed the $100 million mark during their opening weekends, and historically, these films have predominantly been male-driven superhero flicks from Marvel and DC, or from blockbuster franchises like Harry Potter, Star Wars, or Jurassic Park.

The Margot Robbie-led film had a stronger opening than Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which earned $146.3 million on its debut and has since grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

In just five days, “Barbie” has already earned over $470 million worldwide.

The success of “Barbie” comes at a time when studios have been grappling with connecting to moviegoers. Several adult-targeted blockbusters have underperformed in recent months, leading industry insiders to question whether consumer preferences have shifted away from Hollywood.

However, along with the impressive performance of Universal’s “Oppenheimer,” it seems that moviegoers haven’t abandoned theaters, but rather have become more selective in choosing what they watch. The critically acclaimed pairing of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” motivated audiences to experience the content on the largest screens possible and in large groups.

Movie theater chains recorded record-breaking foot traffic over the weekend, with additional screenings for both films being scheduled and concession sales soaring.

“Barbie” will face competition from Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” in the upcoming weekend, but box office analysts anticipate strong word-of-mouth support for both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” in the weeks ahead.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and CNBC. NBCUniversal distributed “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Oppenheimer.”
