Leading companies involved in this initiative include Microsoft, Google, OpenAI (the creators of ChatGPT), and Anthropic, an AI research firm. The formation of this forum aligns with the ongoing efforts of lawmakers worldwide to understand and regulate the rapidly growing AI sector.
Membership to the Frontier Model Forum is open to organizations that actively develop and deploy frontier models, demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring frontier model safety, and are willing to contribute to the forum’s collective endeavors. Additionally, the forum will establish an advisory board responsible for guiding its strategic direction and identifying key priorities.
While the tech industry is actively pushing for safety measures in AI development, it is worth noting that the existing guidelines in the United States remain voluntary. However, the four leading companies of the forum, along with Amazon, Inflection, and Meta, have voluntarily pledged to uphold commitments aimed at effectively managing AI risks, as proposed by the White House.
In Congress, Senator Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority Leader from New York, recently introduced a framework for AI regulation, highlighting the need for briefings with all senators. However, at present, no specific regulatory proposals have emerged.
