Adam Selipsky: No single generative AI model will reign supreme

When Andy Jassy became the CEO of Amazon in 2021, he brought back one of the company’s former executives, Adam Selipsky, to lead its cloud computing division, Amazon Web Services (AWS). Selipsky had previously worked with Jassy at AWS for 11 years and had valuable knowledge of the business and its culture. As AWS competes with Google and Microsoft in the cloud AI space, Selipsky discusses the importance of generative AI and its impact on Amazon, its retail customers, and AWS customers.

Selipsky emphasizes that generative AI will significantly impact and reinvent various applications in both personal and professional lives. He notes that Amazon has been invested in AI and machine learning for a long time, with the company’s personalization efforts on the Amazon website dating back to 1998. However, Amazon’s approach to AI differs from other companies, as it focuses on meeting the specific needs of AWS customers in building business and organizational applications.

In terms of the AI platform AWS is building, Selipsky explains that there will be different layers to cater to various requirements. At the bottom layer, some companies may want to build their own models, while others may prefer tailored models for specific use cases. Selipsky acknowledges that the relative value of large, general-purpose models versus smaller, targeted models is still uncertain, and AWS aims to offer both options to its customers.

Addressing Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI and its head start in AI development, Selipsky dismisses claims that AWS is behind. He highlights AWS’s extensive experience in running technology and systems at a massive scale, as well as the broadest and deepest set of cloud capabilities. Selipsky also points out that AWS has been working on machine learning since 2017 with the release of its SageMaker platform, which already has over 100,000 customers. Unlike some competitors, AWS is building its own models instead of outsourcing them.

Selipsky further discusses the importance of customer choice in generative AI, emphasizing that the technology will be foundational for years to come, and the winning technologies and companies may not have emerged yet. AWS is committed to providing choice and access to various models from startups like Anthropic and Stability AI, as well as potentially adding others in the future.
