- A TikTok video featuring an influencer doing a passenger’s makeup on a flight has gone viral.
- In an interview with Insider, the two individuals involved in the interaction shared their story.
- They also discussed how the experience helped them cope with anxiety and illness.
When Sabrina Hassan, a 23-year-old beauty content creator from Arizona, boarded an American Airlines flight on June 22, she was feeling nervous.
Sabrina had been invited to a TikTok event in California and was anxious about doing makeup in front of a crowd and other influencers, as she revealed in an interview with Insider.
However, as she entered the plane with her sister and searched for her seat, she was approached by another passenger.
“This woman said, ‘You look so beautiful!’ and I responded, ‘Oh my God, thank you! You’re so sweet,'” Hassan recalled. “She was hyping me up and the whole row could hear it — and then I ended up sitting next to her.”
The woman was Linda Harrison, a 56-year-old Californian who was traveling home after visiting her sister in Utah.
“Sabrina and her sister were both absolutely gorgeous. Their skin looks like it belongs in Dove commercials,” Linda told Insider. “Her sister was in the aisle across and Sabrina was next to me.”
Harrison suggested that the sisters sit together, but they declined. This led to Hassan striking up a conversation with her new seatmate, where she explained her job and her mixture of excitement and anxiety about going to Anaheim.
While Harrison had no knowledge of TikTok at the time, she could tell that Hassan was skilled in makeup.
“She mentioned how nervous she was, so I asked, ‘Do you want to practice on me?'” Harrison recounted.
As it turned out, the influencer did want to practice.
“Initially, when she asked me to do her makeup, I thought she meant sometime in the future when I returned to California. But then she pulled out her makeup and I was like: ‘Oh my God! Okay, I’ll do it!'”
Hassan asked if she could record the interaction, to which Harrison agreed, and they proceeded with the makeup session.
“I’m from the ’80s,” Harrison said. “I don’t use sponges or anything. I just apply makeup with my fingers and spread it around. So when Sabrina used a makeup brush, I immediately felt fancy.”
Hassan noticed other passengers smiling at them, and the flight attendants complimented their interaction.
“We were on an airplane with strangers, yet it felt like being at a girls’ party getting pampered,” Harrison remarked.
But as they continued conversing, they discovered that their interaction went beyond just applying blush and lip gloss.
“Linda told me she’s currently undergoing chemotherapy and hasn’t been feeling beautiful lately,” Hassan shared. “Despite that, she was so positive and brought light to our plane ride. You would never guess she’s going through something so significant.”
Harrison mentioned that she typically doesn’t wear much makeup due to her treatment for stage 4 colon cancer.
“I’ve lost my eyebrows, I’ve lost my eyelashes, and I can’t really wear mascara,” she explained. “My skin always looks like I have a sunburn. I don’t resemble my former self. But that day on the plane, Sabrina made me feel like that woman again.”
In addition to makeup, Harrison expressed gratitude that Hassan has now become a friend to her daughters. Both of her daughters are starting their careers, with the youngest being a nurse in another state.
Due to the nature of her work and the associated health risks, they don’t get to see each other often, Harrison mentioned.
“When I was at the airport, I looked up the hospital where my daughter was working that day,” Harrison said. “She was only 5.6 miles away from me, but we couldn’t meet. It was difficult.”
“My daughters, aged 28 and 30, saw the TikTok video first, and both of them reached out to Sabrina,” Harrison added. “They’ve been chatting, and it has been comforting for my girls to know that someone took care of their mom and made her feel special when they couldn’t be there.”
Hassan emphasized that the experience had a profound impact on her as well. Not only did Harrison’s positivity and kindness help her overcome her anxiety, but their interaction also made her realize how she can use her talents to uplift others.
“My favorite part of this whole experience was being able to let Linda know that she is beautiful,” Hassan said. “I never imagined that I could change her life in the same way she changed mine. I wish everyone could meet her.”
Both Harrison and Hassan agree that their interaction has transformed them for the better, and they are actively trying to arrange another meeting in the near future.
For now, they hope that their story will inspire others to recognize the power of kindness and asking questions.
“Everyone is fighting a battle that may not be visible,” Harrison remarked. “My battle is more noticeable. Sometimes I use a walker. I’ve gained nearly 70 pounds since starting treatment. It has been extremely traumatic. But then there’s Sabrina, who seems to have it all on the surface. She’s young, she’s beautiful — it’s surprising that she was feeling nervous and insecure.”
“I’m the one who needed the makeup, but she’s the one who truly benefited from this interaction, and that’s what makes it so special,” Harrison concluded. “I strongly believe in asking for what you want with a smile on your face and good intentions. You never know what the answer will be.”
