- He later returned to the bar heavily intoxicated and threw what appeared to be a Molotov cocktail.
Mexican authorities have revealed that a man who was expelled from a bar for disrespecting women later returned and deliberately set the establishment ablaze, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals.
According to a statement from the Sonora Attorney General’s Office, multiple witnesses reported that the suspect threw what seemed to be a Molotov cocktail at the building’s entrance.
The bar, located near the Mexico-Arizona border in San Luis Rio Colorado, experienced the fire incident at approximately 1:33 a.m. on Saturday. Witnesses stated that the suspect was heavily intoxicated. The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed by authorities.
Images showing the aftermath of the fire depict the bar’s exterior covered in soot and its roof severely damaged.
Out of the 11 casualties, seven were men and four were women. It was reported that one of the women was an American citizen. Additionally, four other individuals sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals in Sonora and Arizona.
Mexico’s high levels of crime have garnered significant attention globally and have affected numerous American citizens. Earlier this year, a drug cartel targeted and kidnapped four Americans who were en route to Matamoros for a medical procedure, resulting in the deaths of two of them.
The US State Department has issued travel advisories for most Mexican states and advises travelers to “reconsider travel” to Sonora state due to the prevalence of crime and kidnappings.
