LAPD Commemorates the Five-Year Anniversary of the Trader Joe’s Tragic Shooting

On this day, the Los Angeles police are commemorating the fifth anniversary of the tragic officer-involved shooting at a Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake. This incident resulted in the loss of Melyda Corado, an assistant store manager. Our utmost condolences and sympathies go out to the Corado family and all those affected by this traumatic event,” said the LAPD Media Relations department in a statement.

The shooter, Gene Evin Atkins, who was 28 years old at the time, was apprehended after firing at pursuing officers and seeking refuge inside the store, taking hostages. The officer responsible for the gunfire that resulted in Corado’s death will not face any disciplinary action, as determined by the Board of Police Commission and the Office of Inspector General. Although tragic, they stated that the shooting was in line with department policy guidelines.

Due to pending civil litigation, the department is unable to provide extensive details. However, it has been established that the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office found the officers involved justified in their use of deadly force and cleared them of any criminal charges.

Nonetheless, the family of the deceased has filed a lawsuit against the two officers and the department. Recently, a judge ruled that the lawsuit can proceed.

The charges against Atkins include 51 crimes such as murder and attempted murder of a police officer, as well as multiple counts of false imprisonment. His bail has been increased from $18.7 million to $23 million.
