The film “Barbenheimer” has made a blazing start at the domestic box office, earning $22.3 million from Thursday night preview tickets. This is the highest opening night collection of any film released in 2023, surpassing the $17.5 million of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and the $17.4 million of Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

The R-rated film “Oppenheimer,” which runs for three hours, also had a strong showing, earning $10.5 million from Thursday screenings. This is comparable to the successful releases of films like 2017’s “Wonder Woman” and this year’s live action “The Little Mermaid.”

As the weekend approaches, Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” is expected to exceed $140 million in box office earnings during its first three days in theaters. Universal’s “Oppenheimer” is predicted to make at least $50 million, with some analysts suggesting it could surpass $60 million.

Together, these two films could generate $200 million in their opening weekend, and when combined with the ticket sales of “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and “Sound of Freedom,” it has the potential to be the highest-grossing weekend of the year so far.

This is a much-needed boost for the domestic box office, which has seen several big-budget movies like “The Flash” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” fall short of expectations.

Major movie chains have reported strong ticket sales for both films this weekend, leading to additional showings being added to accommodate the demand.

About 40,000 members of the AMC Theatre loyalty program have purchased tickets to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer on the same day. The National Association of Theatre owners estimates that over 200,000 moviegoers will attend same-day viewings of these two films.
