Charlie Chaplin’s daughter, Josephine Chaplin, passed away on July 13 at the age of 74, according to confirmation from Fox News Digital. The statement released by Chaplin’s estate revealed that she passed away peacefully, surrounded by her beloved family and friends. Josephine had managed the Chaplin Office in Paris on behalf of her siblings for many years before taking a leave to care for her husband, Jean-Claude Gardin. The cause of her death has not been disclosed.
A funeral service was held for Josephine at Père Lachaise on Friday afternoon. She was one of the eight children that Charlie Chaplin had with his fourth wife, Oona O’Neill. Throughout his life, Chaplin fathered a total of 11 children with three of his four wives, including Mildred Harris, Paulette Goodard, and Lita Grey.
Josephine followed in her famous father’s footsteps and carved out her own acting career. She even appeared alongside him in the film “Limelight,” which he also wrote and directed. In 1967, she starred in another one of Chaplin’s films, “A Countess From Hong Kong.” Josephine’s notable credits also include films like “The Man Without a Face” and “Shadowman.”
In 1969, Josephine married Greek businessman Nikki Sistovaris, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1977. She then married archeologist Jean-Claude Gardin in 1989, and the couple remained together until Gardin’s passing in 2013. Both Charlie Chaplin and Oona O’Neill have since passed away.
Charlie Chaplin was not just a comic genius but also had a successful career as a filmmaker and composer. He passed away on Christmas Day in 1977 at the age of 88. Oona O’Neill, his fourth wife and Josephine’s mother, died in 1990.
