Rosh Mahtani, the founder of Alighieri, a London-based jewelry label, shares her journey of discovering and appreciating her Indian heritage through the cuisine of her mother. As a child, she would often complain about her mother’s Indian food, longing for the pizza and pasta that her friends enjoyed. However, as she entered her 20s, her perspective shifted, and she began to truly appreciate her mother’s cooking, which also led her to embrace her cultural heritage, something she had previously hidden.

To celebrate the beginning of alfresco dining season, Mahtani and her mother, Nims Mahtani, prepare an Indian family-style feast in the courtyard garden of Rosh’s London flat. One of the standout dishes in the feast is kachori, which are like little parcels of peas. Mahtani’s mother painstakingly makes the pastries from scratch, making them a special treat. Whenever Mahtani goes through a difficult time, her mother always makes kachori for her, bringing comfort and love into her life.

Another highlight of the feast is pistachio kulfi, a dessert that was made by Mahtani’s grandmother. She used to put the kulfi mixture into sterling-silver cones to set it, creating a memorable experience of slipping them out of the cones by running them under warm water.

Although Mahtani lives alone and rarely cooks for herself, she thoroughly enjoys hosting and cooking for others. She prefers a communal atmosphere where everyone helps out, creating a sense of solidarity and nurturing among the guests.

For her 30th birthday, Mahtani’s mother gifted her a beautiful bound book filled with hand-written recipes that have been passed down through generations. It’s a way for her to honor the traditional foods and share them with friends, who often delight in the flavors that she once resisted as a child.
