The Riverside County Fire Department reported that the Rabbit Fire in Lakeview has been contained at 95% as of Friday.
The containment figure was updated at 7 a.m. on Friday, the first update since 7 p.m. on Thursday when it was increased from 85% to 90%.
Despite facing excessive heat and low relative humidity, firefighters have been working diligently to strengthen containment lines and provide suppression repairs when necessary, especially due to the steep rugged terrain at the scene.
A department official confirmed that firefighters will continue patrolling overnight and extinguishing any interior fires within the burned area.
Full containment is now expected on Sunday, two days later than originally projected.
As of noon on Wednesday, all evacuation warnings have been lifted.
The current size of the fire remains at 8,283 acres, unchanged since Monday night when it was updated from 7,950 acres.
The fire initially started around 3:30 p.m. on July 14 in the northeast area of Gilman Springs Road and Jack Rabbit trail. Although 152 structures were threatened, no damage or destruction has been reported so far.
A total of 1,578 personnel, including 184 fire engines, 20 water tenders, seven helicopters, and 30 hand crews, have been actively involved in the firefighting efforts, with additional air tankers being flown in from across the state.
While details are scarce, one civilian has been reported injured. The severity of the injury and the identity of the individual have not been disclosed.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The Rabbit Fire was the largest among four brush fires that occurred on July 14 and 15 in Riverside County. The other three fires have already been fully or nearly contained by Tuesday.
