Ed Davey: South-west England voters are aware that the Liberal Democrats are the key to removing the Tories

In the recent byelection in Somerton and Frome, our brilliant Liberal Democrat candidate, Sarah Dyke, achieved a remarkable victory, overturning a Conservative majority of 19,000 and securing her own impressive 11,000 majority. This historic swing is a testament to the exceptional campaign team of the Lib Dems, who have achieved four incredible byelection victories in just over two years.

During the campaign, I had the opportunity to speak with Somerset residents, and their overwhelming anger and frustration were palpable. Hardworking individuals who make significant sacrifices to make ends meet are disheartened by the Conservative government’s indulgence in political drama. The Conservatives’ lack of awareness even extends to issues such as difficulty in accessing healthcare services like GP appointments and dentists. This anger propelled lifelong Conservative voters to switch to the Lib Dems, just as we witnessed in previous byelection victories in Chesham and Amersham, North Shropshire, and Tiverton and Honiton. Additionally, supporters of other political parties, such as Labour and the Greens, lent their support to help remove the Conservatives from power.

The rejection of Rishi Sunak’s out-of-touch government and the demand for change expressed by the people of Somerton and Frome resonate with the sentiments of the entire nation. Furthermore, this victory highlights the resurgence of the Liberal Democrats in the West Country, which was once a stronghold for our party.

Historically, our success in the West Country began at the local government level. We secured a majority on the new unitary Somerset council, gaining 37 seats while the Conservatives lost 34. Notably, Richard Foord achieved a remarkable victory in the Tiverton and Honiton byelection, overturning a 24,000 Conservative majority. In May, we won 145 of the 358 council seats in Devon, surpassing the combined total of the Conservatives, Labour, and the Greens.

The reasons behind this success are multifaceted. The national crises of rising costs of living, environmental concerns, and the NHS are prevalent issues affecting people across the country. During the campaign, local health services emerged as the primary concern of Somerton and Frome residents, echoing the sentiments of individuals nationwide. Additionally, West Country farmers have been adversely affected by the Conservative government’s mishandling of post-Brexit trade deals and the transition to new farming payment schemes. The disregard and neglect experienced by farmers have not gone unnoticed by the community.

The people of Somerton and Frome vividly recall the stark contrast between David Heath, the former Lib Dem MP who served as a tireless advocate for the local area from 1997 to 2015, and David Warburton, the absentee Conservative MP who remained silent in parliament for an extended period before eventually resigning amidst scandal. They desired a local champion who would tirelessly fight for their interests, leading to the election of Sarah Dyke.

Additionally, constituents in the south-west recognize that the Liberal Democrats are the main challengers to the Conservatives in most constituencies. In contrast to Labour and the Greens, it is the Lib Dems who have the potential to unseat the Conservative party.

In summary, the Liberal Democrats’ success in the West Country, where the blue wall of traditionally Conservative areas is being eroded, mirrors our achievements in the home counties. The south-west is once again turning gold.
