“Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland faced criticism for being “too old” to audition for the role of Haley Dunphy, despite only a three-year age difference between her and the character.
In a recent interview with BuzzFeed, Hyland revealed that initially, the producers didn’t want to see her because she was 18 and Haley’s character was 15. They believed she was too old for the role.
However, Hyland’s agent’s assistant fought for her by emphasizing that she looked much younger than her age.
The casting process was challenging for Hyland, with multiple readings and a difficult journey to landing the role.
“She’s too old. She’s 18,” Hyland recalled the initial feedback. “And then after that, I went to see the director and creators.”

Sarah Hyland portrayed the character of Haley, the on-screen daughter of Phil and Claire Dunphy, throughout the 11-season run of “Modern Family” from 2009 to 2020.
Hyland also shared the challenges of growing up in the spotlight and how she had to separate her personal life struggles from her work on the show.
“I think that was probably the most challenging part, was all of the lows in my 20s that I experienced,” Hyland said. “I had to very much put them aside and leave them at the door whenever I went to work because I refused to let anything affect my job.”
