Whole Foods Stores to Integrate Pay-by-Palm Technology Across All Locations by Year End, Announces Amazon

Amazon is set to introduce its innovative palm-scanning payment system at a Whole Foods store in Seattle, with plans for further expansion to other locations in the future.

Rather than relying on traditional payment methods, Amazon’s biometric technology known as Amazon One allows shoppers to enter and pay for their items by simply placing their palm over a scanning device. To initiate the payment process, customers must first link their palm to a stored credit card. Once connected, they can effortlessly make payments by waving their hand over the designated kiosk.

Announced on Thursday, Amazon aims to implement this palm-scanning payment system at all Whole Foods stores by the year’s end. Currently, the technology can already be found in over 200 Whole Foods locations, and the company expects it to be available in all of their approximately 500 stores in the coming months.

According to Amazon, there is a growing demand for this innovative technology, which has already been used over 3 million times. In fact, the company has expanded its focus on physical store technologies and now offers them to third parties through its Amazon Web Services cloud division. This has led to partnerships with airport stores, sports stadiums, and concert venues, where Amazon’s palm-based payment system and cashierless checkout system, known as Just Walk Out, have been installed.

This palm-scanning technology has also been adopted by other businesses. For instance, Panera Bread tested Amazon One at select locations earlier this year, while Coors Field baseball stadium in Denver introduced the palm scanning device to allow attendees to purchase alcohol.

Amazon’s dedication to improving the shopping experience through innovative technologies makes it a prominent player in the retail industry. By introducing the palm-scanning payment system at Whole Foods, the company continues to set itself apart and offer customers a more convenient and seamless way to make purchases.
