Hudson’s Bay to host 21 new Zellers pop-up shops in 5 provinces

Over the next few weeks, a multitude of Zellers pop-ups are set to emerge within Hudson’s Bay stores in five provinces by August 11th.

HBC has announced that these 21 new pop-ups will be smaller than their previous retail locations and will serve as test spots for potential permanent Zellers stores.

“Pop-ups play a vital role in our expansion strategy. They allow us to explore and experiment in new markets, gather valuable customer insights, and refine our offerings before establishing larger-format store locations,” said HBC President Sophia Hwang-Judiesch.

These pop-ups will appear in malls across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and even Saskatchewan.

Zellers, which first opened in 1931, was acquired by HBC in 1978 and became the retailer’s discount division.

However, just over a decade ago, HBC sold most of its Zellers storefronts to Target when the American retail giant briefly entered the Canadian market.

In March, HBC reintroduced the Zellers brand by placing several stores inside its Hudson’s Bay locations.

These new pop-ups will be smaller, ranging from 1,000 to 2,800 square feet, compared to the previous 8,000 to 10,000 square feet stores.

A spokesperson for the company did not disclose any plans to open standalone Zellers stores.

HBC also announced the upcoming opening of a permanent, full-sized Zellers location inside the Hudson’s Bay in Bramalea City Centre in September. This came as a result of HBC’s decision to close its store in Burlington City Centre.
